New Changes for Pick Up Services starting june 1st, 2024
Effective June 2024, the City of DeSoto will be making new changes for trash, recycling, bulk, and brush pick up. For example, residents will be issued a new trash and recycling bins from the City of DeSoto.  For more details and a list of FAQs, click on this document

If you have any questions or problems with your trash service, please call the City of DeSoto Action Center at (972) 274-CITY or (972) 230-9600.
The City of DeSoto currently does not issue or replace receptacles for regular household trash. You may purchase your own trash cart from a local hardware or janitorial supply store to hold secured trash bags at your property. You may also purchase strong 2-ply trash bags at the Water Utility window at a cost of $13.23 +tax for a roll of 50 bags.

Republic Services is the primary trash contractor for the City of DeSoto. If dumpsters are needed for large commercial or residential projects, contact the Action Center (972) 230-9600.

Trash pick-up Schedule

Trash is picked up twice weekly.
  • All residents who live west of Hampton Road have their garbage collected on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • All residents who live east of Hampton Road have their garbage collected on Mondays and Thursdays.
  • All residents have their recycling collected each week on Wednesdays.
Trash pick-up requirements
  • Trash should be out by 7 AM to ensure collection. It is recommended for trash bins to be placed out the night before after 6 PM. 
  • Trash will be collected between the hours of 7AM and 6 PM on the scheduled trash day.
  • Do not put trash out days in advance.
  • Garbage must be bagged properly in plastic refuse bags. No paper or grocery bags. 
  • Bag must not weigh more than 50 lbs.
  • Receptacles must be placed in the proper location either on the front right-of-way or in the alley for weekly pick-up.
Large / bulky item pick-up
Bulky items include couches, chairs, mattresses, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, plumbing fixtures, refrigerators, stoves, and lawn mowers. 
  • Items heavier than 50 lbs. should be placed in the front the property. Place items out on the second trash day of the week (either Thursday or Friday) and allow up to 10 business days to complete the pick-up. 
  • Items less than 50 lbs. can be placed in the alley for pickup. Place items out on the second trash day of the week (either Thursday or Friday) and allow up to 10 business days to complete the pick-up. 
  • Do not put bulk out days in advance.
  • Refrigerators/Deep freezers must have the refrigerant/coolant removed by an authorized appliance repair person and “red tagged” before it can be picked up.
  • All fencing material, but not the concrete base or metal posts, can be placed out in the front of the property for pick-up.
Unacceptable Items include vehicle parts, tires, batteries, carpet, flammables, hazardous waste, electronic waste, and older modeled mirrored televisions (with hump in the back). Any type of construction material to include lumber, drywall, paneling, tile, flooring, siding, concrete, sheet rock, bricks, glass or carpet/area rugs larger than 8’ x 10’ will not be collected.

  • Items larger than 7 feet and/or heavier than 75 lbs. are not accepted.
  • Unacceptable items must go to the McCommas Bluff Landfill. The charge for non-City of Dallas residents is $42.80 for every ton.

brush / limb Pick-Up
  • Brush refers to trunks, branches, limbs, and leaves from trees or shrubs.
  • Place large brush/limbs out in the front of the property out on the second trash day of the week (either Thursday or Friday) and allow up to 10 business days to complete the pickup.
  • Brush must be stacked neatly, weigh less than 50 lbs., be less than 4ft in length and be no less than 4ft in height. The pile should not be larger than a washing machine.
  • Do not place in the street or on the sidewalk.
  • Do not place within 5 ft of mailbox, fence or wall, water meter, telephone box, parked cars, fire hydrant, utility pole, or traffic sign.
  • Do not place under low hanging tree limbs or power lines.
  • Do not place in a vacant lot.
recycling Pick-Up
Residential recycling occurs every Wednesday throughout the City.
  • Recycling should be out by 7AM to ensure collection. It is recommended for recycling to be out after 6 PM the night before to avoid service interruption.
  • Recyling will be collected between the hours of 7AM and 6PM. 
  • Recycling should be in recycling container or in clear or blue plastic bags. No grocery bags.
  • Cardboard boxes must be broken down and neatly stacked with other recyclable items.

  • Large containers of used cooking oil, grease traps, fats, oils, greases & other inedible byproducts weighing more than 50 lbs. are not acceptable. These items can be recycled at the Home Chemical Collection Center or at any other grease collecting center in the DFW area.

HOLIDAY EXCEPTIONS
There is no trash pick-up on the following holidays should they fall on a weekday:
  • New Year’s Day
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
