Research Databases - Overview

Through the Texas State Library, DeSoto Library customers have free, unlimited, full text access to online encyclopedias, professional and academic journals, newspapers, magazines, and 68 reputable databases. These databases provide accurate, authoritative, and commercial-free resources.

  • Academic Search Complete
    • A comprehensive resource of full-text academic journals, videos, reports and books on dozens of subjects from anthropology to zoology.
  • Chilton Library
    • The most authoritative automotive repair information available to car owners. Contains thousands of year, make, and model combinations for car repair covering the most popular vehicles of the past 30 years, plus additional coverage of specialty models.
  • Gale Legal Forms
    • A wide selection of state-specific (and multi-state) legal forms across the most popular legal areas. Includes real estate contracts, wills, pre-marital agreements, bankruptcy, divorce, landlord tenant and many others. 
  • Newspaper Source Plus
    • Cover-to-cover full text for U.S., international, and regional newspapers, as well as television and radio news transcripts for major networks.

This resource provides live interactive online help, combined with online resources to guide you through the necessary tasks to get a job. It includes personality and career assessments, interview skill tips, resume and cover letter help, and more.

Allows you to access a database of practice tests based on the official exams. Some of the practice exams include: GED, ASVAB, SAT, ACT, PSAT, TAKS for some grades, police officer entrance exams, firefighter entrance exams, and real estate license exams. Mango Foreign Language Learning
Mango is an online language-learning database that can help you learn languages like Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, Russian, and more. To use the database, type in the 14 digit number on the back of your DeSoto Public Library card.

Medline Plus Database
A service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, this database includes information on health topics such as: Drugs and Supplements, Medical Encyclopedias, Medical Dictionaries, Current Headline Information, and Links to Other Resources. This resource is publicly-accessible.

Reference Solutions (formerly ReferenceUSA)
Available on public computers inside the library. If using wireless access inside the library or from another location, accept the database terms and conditions, and then enter your DeSoto Public Library card number.
You've got homework. We've got help. The DeSoto Public Library now offers help from real, live tutors right at the library via the Internet! Live Homework Help is available for Kindergarten – 12th grade from 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. This program connects students to a real live tutor. Just enter the subject you need help in and within a few minutes or less you will be connected to an expert tutor. Students can receive help in math, science, social studies, English, as well as resume writing and job search skills. Students will need their DeSoto Public Library card number.
