Our summer has been filled with educational workshops and activities and with giving back to our community. We learned how to manage our finances, cook nutritional meals, and about Brazilian Martial Arts and much, much, more.  One of our favorite things to do was work with our Book Buddies. Check out our pics.

Our 'Teen Tech Week Scavenger Hunt' was lots of fun. It gave us a basic introduction to library services, both online and off. We also became more familiar with library resources so we can better locate materials for future projects, research, or just for fun.

February 2014

We celebrated 'Love Your Library Month' by helping to make sure that our library stays in tip-top shape, by straightening books on library shelves and putting them back in order. We were a great help to the library staff.

December 2013

Our Christmas Toy Drive was a success. We want to thank everyone who donated a toy and supported us. With your help, we collected 42 toys for the Santa's Helpers program.

DESOTO— The Teen Advisory Board and the Desoto Public Library hosted its Holiday Celebration and Cheer event Saturday afternoon.

For three years consecutively, the staff members and teen volunteers help the children celebrate the Christmas season with fun games, holiday arts and crafts, and story time with Mrs. Claus.

The Teen Advisory Board’s president Michael Wright believed that the events like the holiday celebration are important for the group to get involved in. "It gives us the opportunity to go out into the community to help promote literacy and spread happiness,” he said.

Before Mrs. Claus showed up, the children were able to write their letters to Santa.

When she arrived, they helped picked out the books from her bag and listened attentively as she read each story. Once story time was over, the kids either played games to win prizes or made gifts like reindeer glasses or Christmas ornaments.

Staff member Stephanie Brooks enjoyed making crafts and seeing Mrs. Claus read to the kids.

"It’s a pretty rare experience, because most of the time it’s all about Santa,” she said.

The majority of the teens, including TAB member Jordan Goodson, ruled "Bear Stays Up for Christmas” as their favorite book read by Mrs. Claus. "The main thing that I loved about it was hearing the kids’ thoughts about the story,” he said.

TAB member Breya Coley shared her reason for celebrating Christmas.

"To me, it’s about spending time with your friends and family,” she said. She also hoped that kids will "never stop believing” this holiday season.

TAB member Tariq Ramzy volunteered to give back to the community. "I enjoy seeing the kids around the holidays,” he said. "I love to see the smiles on their faces.”

He also expressed how the library affects many children’s lives during the holiday season. "Some children aren’t as privileged as others; so when they come here, they feel as if they’re apart of everybody in the community,” said Ramzy. "They walk away with that feeling of pride and happiness.”

TAB member Vicky Yeung hopes that the event will help kids enjoy and appreciate their childhood. "My childhood was spent in school doing work,” she said.

"So they should really cherish their childhood.”
