Our summer has been filled with educational workshops and activities and with giving back to our community. We learned how to manage our finances, cook nutritional meals, and about Brazilian Martial Arts and much, much, more. One of our favorite things to do was work with our Book Buddies. Check out our pics.
June - August 2014
We celebrated National D.E.A.R. Day (Drop Everything and Read Day) by having a Teen Read-a-thon and pizza party.
Our 'Teen Tech Week Scavenger Hunt' was lots of fun. It gave us a basic introduction to library services, both online and off. We also became more familiar with library resources so we can better locate materials for future projects, research, or just for fun.
We celebrated 'Love Your Library Month' by helping to make sure that our library stays in tip-top shape, by straightening books on library shelves and putting them back in order. We were a great help to the library staff.
Our Christmas Toy Drive was a success. We want to thank everyone who donated a toy and supported us. With your help, we collected 42 toys for the Santa's Helpers program.
The Manager at Desoto's Tom Thumb was very grateful.
We've been busy 'Making Our Summer Count!'
Check out all the things we've accomplished!
Some of us received summer jobs at the DPL Teen Empowerment Summit.
We read with our Book Buddies. We made duct tape ties and wallets.
We helped our Book Buddies to write their own stories. We took a t-shirt print screening class.
We learned about careers at the Art Institute. We learned how to manage our finances with City Credit Union.
Thanks Mr. Newkirk, we really needed that!
We performed picture book skits for children. I won an IPod for volunteering.
We learned how to communicate We participated in a Teen Talk Forum with City leaders.
I won Beats by Dre for volunteering. Former TAB Members helped out during their summer break.
We did mock interviews and created resumes.
Whew! That's a lot, but we were determined not to waste our summer. We made it count!
